DIY Sauna Projects for Weekend Warriors: Affordable and Amazing Ideas

by Jimmy Van Houton

A DIY Sauna is something that provides a multitude of benefits in your own backyard. If you’ve ever been to your gym sauna before, then you’ll know that it’s long been used to deep heat, the cold and aching muscles that cause you then to sweat.

After you’ve had a workout, sitting in a sauna can be one of the most invigorating experiences because you are sweating out all of those toxins that you’ve been working through on your muscles while you’ve been doing your running or you’re lifting. Those who sit in the sauna don’t just sit in the heat, they also sit in a space where they can improve their health without even being aware of it.

Building your own DIY sauna and using it regularly will not just improve your cardiovascular health, but you can reduce stress and promote much better sleep while cleansing your skin at the same time. Let’s take a look at affordable and amazing ideas for those weekend warriors who need a new DIY sauna project.

A wood burning sauna.

These are small and attractive DIY saunas that can even fit in the city backyards. They are big enough to seat four people comfortably. But if you only have a small outdoor space, these are ideal. They’re also cheap and quick to build and very, very cheap to maintain. You just need a natural wood exterior and a barn door for curb appeal and to really improve your property value. Most small wood burning saunas can also be portable with wheels placed underneath them, so make sure that you find a design that can allow you to do that.

A barrel DIY sauna.

The sauna barrel design makes for a very cheap and very fast construction. They are also especially durable and because they have an unusual shape, they are awesome in a natural setting. If you have one place close to a river or at the edge of woodland on your weekend away. The nearby Woodlands gives you plenty of Deadwood to be able to burn them in the stove. Most barrel DIY saunas use recycled materials too, which means you can keep the costs as low as possible.

The shed sauna.

If you’re particularly low on funds, but you still want to have your own DIY sauna, you might want to convert your existing shed into one. An old shed on the property that is no longer needed is perfect for that. This way you can convert something old into something useful.

The trash bag.

This is a cool and creative idea for a DIY sauna. And you can create it from a cost of almost nothing, especially if you have everything to hand. With a tall stick and a couple of plastic trash bags to form a teepee, you can create a sauna out of these. You need to build a fire and heat a few massive rocks and place the rocks inside the trash bag sauna. Then all you have to do is get in and close the opening so that the heat won’t escape. It’s cheap, functional, portable and recyclable, and you can take it with you for camping trips.

The wooden box

A wood burning sauna with a wood box is a much easier way to have a cheap solution for your backyard. Building a DIY sauna and adding the wood box on the outside is simple. And it can double as an outside bench as well. So this design can be incorporated into a recreation spot in your home. The wooden box can hold all of the cut wood. And if you have an existing sauna, you now have somewhere to keep all of your wood ready for burning so that you can steam to your heart’s content.

A sauna on the go.

Most saunas can be mounted with wheels and then transported behind a bicycle or a car to any location. Small saunas often fool people into thinking there won’t be enough room, but portable sweat pods can often seat up to six people without any issues. There is usually a tiny wood burning stove that heats the interior of the pod and there is a chimney at the front to keep the smoke removed from it. This allows you to steam and to sit and relax after a swim or a workout no matter where you are, and you can take it with you next time you go camping.
